Wairakei Terraces is one of New Zealand's newest and innovative tourism attractions.
Initially fashioned by mans hand, it is being left up to mother nature (Papatuanuku) to orchestrate and perfect the production of colours and overlaying of silica to form maginificent terraces.
Incorporated into a leisurely one hour guided or self governed tour, are carvings depicting the stories and history of Ngatoroirangi and Ngati Tuwharetoa, the Te Kiri o Hinekai stream and pool known as the 'Honey-moon Pool' famous for its healing properties, a soothing footbath and waterfall, blue alum pools and man-made geyser, red mud pools, animal park, cafeteria, horse & carriage rides, souvenir & craft retail and a carving house featuring Maori carvers at work.
Exclusive guided geothermal tours provide the visitor with audio visuals and displays on one of the world's most extraordinary engineering feats, the generation of electricity using local geothermal energy. Bookings are essential for this activity.
